Working Holidays at Penrose

In July and August we had 4 working holidays come and stay at the basecamp at Chyvarloe to work with the Penrose wardens. The holidays consisted of a week of learning countryside skills and included activities such as Cornish hedge laying, fencing, step building and maintaining footpaths and hedges.

The working holidays have 12 places for volunteers and are a great way of introducing visitors to the every day work of our wardening teams, our properties and are a great opportunity to meet new and old friends. This summer we had volunteers from all over the UK as well as France, Sweden, Switzerland and Germany.

In their spare time the holiday volunteers went kayaking with one of our ambassador businesses, visited the theatre and other NT properties including St Michaels Mount, and explored the Lizard coastline.

Penrose playday

The weather was good for the play day  held at Penrose with various activities inculding mask making, den building, clay play, chalk drawings and insect homes of which the mums had as much fun making as the children.

It was a real team effort with Penrose and Godolphin Wardens, Learning Officer and Volunteers helping to make it a fun day for all.

Will it float?

There was watery fun today at Carleon Cove, Poltesco as we hosted one of the Eden Project's popular play days. Raft building was just one of the activities on offer, with cargo nets to roll around, and a gnome hunt up the stream. How did the little fellas come to be there? Fun for all the family, which rounds off a series of similar days which the Trust has hosted this week at Predannack airfield (plenty of tarmac, perfect for gokarts) and Penrose. Thanks to all involved.

Holifair

All our preparation for Holifair paid off with a fantastic weekend in the sun (well, for some of the time). In our marquee, pebbles were painted, flags were decorated, and windmills and kites were made (and to the relief of all involved, flew!)  In the woodland glade we went back to pre-industrial days, using traditional pole lathes and shave horses for green woodworking with the older children. And when the wind got up we took shelter in the tipi, where we made whistles from elder and string from New Zealand flax.

The National Trust team all had a great time here and were glad to be able to support the Holifield Farm Project, who put on the event using only green energy. We're just as excited about the programme of local events to come in the next few months, so look out for us at Lizard Lifeboat Day on Sunday 15th August!

After a wet start and the cancellation of some activities the den building went ahead and some fantastic dens were built in the woods.

The play day is to be re-scheduled for August 18th 10am - 2pm, and hope we have a nice dry day. Limited numbers please ring Dave to register your interest 07879430703

The Trust are keen supporters of this initiative, Dave Chambers, warden on the Penrose estate says: “We are delighted to be able to offer the estate as a location for the Playday, we have organised a variety of events and activities throughout the day and hope to encourage people to get out and enjoy the outdoor environment.”
